A positive overview of recent changes to Dols and proposed changes to the MHA
The trainers were both excellent. They clearly had a vast amount of knowledge and experience. The examples they used, whereas not directly linked to work Natural Resources Wales does, the whole group found interesting. The course didn't have a lot of practical tasks and NRW staff would have benefitted from more active tasks. An example would be the topic of disclosure. The trainers knew the topic extremely well but candidates would have benefitted from having a file of documents, assessing the content themselves and physically listing items in different schedules themselves. Having previously completed a similar course +10 years ago, the experience of being cross-examined in court was vital to my every day work. It was disappointing that this was optional on the course and no one offered to give evidence and be cross examined. I've given evidence in court and did not put myself forward during the day because I did not want to be singled out. I don't think candidates should have been given a choice. All candidates should have been made to give evidence. In future, the course could be improved by having 2 days of lectures then 2/3 days of a mock investigation, mock interviewing, casefile preparation with ALL candidates giving evidence at a trial-type situation.
