Didn’t realise that a calculator was required liuvky I had one in my bag, this perhaps needs to be stated on the list of things, apart from that excellent course and all staff were friendly

Overall, a very good and informative training course. Personally, I was hoping for instruction on how to fit Molex connectors and any other DC presentation you may come across.

In the Vodafone CAT1 Webinar there was to many references to Cable & Wireless, the two companies have been joined together for number of years now so there should be no reference to Cable & Wireless. The course seems to be just teaching about Fixed line Networks site, there is no reference to Mobile MTX sites or equipment. The Field team now support both Fixed and Mobile equipment.
Response : Dear Allaister Thank you for your comments. Your remarks about C&W are noted and the trainer will avoid references to C&W in future. This course is primarily aimed at engineers performing rack maintenance. The recently launched EAL Level 3 DC Power in telecoms which we run looks at a variety of installation types including mobile. It is the intention for Vodafone to send Cat 2 personnel on this course in future.

I think there could be more detail on the telecom regulations on this course. There was a section of the material related to bonding equipment in racks, this maybe could of been more in detail, I think it was mentioned that if equipment has no earth it doesn't need one, this is incorrect, the relevant standards mention that basically anything containing, or intended to contain information technology or an metallic cable shall be bonded. There was also a photo of daisy chained earths, this is also not to standards. Crimping of cables, I think mentioning that there is a specific BS for this would help clear a lot of questions. M for the 0VE cable was referred to as the Neutral, but the correct name is the Middle Point connection. Also maybe some good schematics of how we get DC, maybe showing old half bridge and full bridge rectification and how we are now at switch mode rectification.
Response : Dear Steve Thank you for your detailed feedback which is always most welcome. Regarding your comments on bonding. The earthing and bonding referred to on the course is related to protection against shock as defined in BS7671. You are quite correct that IT equipment must be bonded as a an effective measure to ensure EMC. Where we state no earth is required this will be for Class II double insulated equipment as a measure of protection against shock. As regards further detail on crimping, DC generation etc then this is covered in detail on The EAL Level 3 award course which we offer and Vodafone are currently reviewing this course with the intention of sending Cat 2 engineers to attend this course in the future. This course also makes references to Mobile installations as well. RE the 'M' ov DC cable you are quite right this is the 'Midpoint' connection and was probably an over sight from the trainer on this occasion. I hope this answers some of your concerns but I would be happy to discuss any further points with you. Kind Regards Steve Redpath CEng FIET Director
