Practical scenario work and repeated use of the ALGEE framework help attendees translate mental health first-aid principles into calm, supportive action. They value knowledgeable, empathetic trainers who create safe, inclusive discussions, maintain a clear pace and encourage learning from peers. The blended modules, videos, handbook and breakout exercises build understanding and confidence that transfers to work and personal situations, although some find the online manual awkward to navigate.

I think it would have been beneficial to have completed role plays to be able to gain individual feedback, other than that, I cannot fault the course. Paul was terrific.

Response: Great idea Sarah, will see how I can bring that into play in future courses.

Paul created a really safe and supportive environment for me and the other participants. He encouraged open discussion where we felt comfortable sharing experiences and views without fear of judgement or being dismissed. This approach meant everyone’s contributions were valued, which made the session engaging, fluid, and inclusive. Although slides and videos were used at points for reference or activities, I particularly appreciated that the focus was on two-way conversation. Unlike some training sessions where participants can become disengaged with hours of slide delivery, this felt interactive, dynamic, and genuinely impactful. Through my own experience I was able to relate to many of the example scenarios, but the training also helped me recognise that there isn’t always a single ‘right’ answer. It challenged me to reflect on how my personal experiences, while useful, may not always be the most appropriate way to support others. I found this perspective incredibly valuable, as it provided me with new tools, greater awareness, and broader exposure to the range of issues people may face.

Paul was absolutely fantastic as a trainer. He made everyone feel so comfortable, really encouraged delegates to contribute but without forcing anyone. Paul made the material very accessible and brought situations to life, with expert knowledge and by using his own experience, wherever possible. Paul was clearly very passionate about mental health first aid. He checked in with us all throughout the course to check on our own wellbeing and offered support prior, throughout and post course. The material itself was very well structured and set at just the right level. I felt that this course gave me far more than I was actually expecting and feel much more confident when dealing with other’s, and my own, mental health going forward. A huge thank you from me!
