When supporting people whose behaviours may cause concern, our aim should be to increase their quality of life. The course content materials are well detailed, the trainer did a great job explaining and delivering them.
Over a three-day period, a training session led by Nyumbani Handema covered various essential topics in care and support, focusing on behavior management and trauma-informed care. The training was well-received and considered helpful, as it provided practical strategies and theoretical understanding to enhance care quality. The topics included: 1. Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Interventions – Emphasizing preventive strategies and escalation responses to challenging behaviors. 2. Trauma-Informed Care – Understanding the impact of trauma on individuals and adapting care approaches accordingly. 3. Positive Behavior Support (PBS) and Legal Frameworks – Ensuring practices comply with legal standards while supporting residents' well-being. 4. Factors Affecting Behavior and the Arousal Model – Recognizing influences on behavior and managing emotional arousal levels. 5. Fundamental Attributional Errors – Addressing common biases that may impact the interpretation of residents' behavior. 6. Restrictive Physical Interventions and Breakaways – Learning safe and appropriate techniques for physical intervention when necessary. This structured training not only imparted knowledge but also included practical techniques that staff can apply in their roles, fostering a safer, more understanding environment for residents.
The course was well delivered and it was very engaging. The trainer made it a safe and open space for participants to be able to share past experiences, both personal and work related. The course was paced well with plenty of opportunity for questions and practice. The use of the projector wasn't great for 3 days but it was managed well.
