About this course
The GS6 – Avoidance of Danger from Overhead Lines course provides essential safety training for individuals who plan, supervise, or carry out work near overhead electrical services. Aligned with HSE Guidance Note GS6 (Fourth Edition), the course focuses on recognising overhead line hazards, understanding legal duties, and implementing control measures to prevent contact with live power lines.
This training equips delegates with the skills to establish and apply a Safe System of Work (SSOW), promote best practices, and reduce the risk of serious injury or fatalities when working in environments where overhead lines are present.

On completion of the course, delegates will be able to:
• Identify overhead line hazards: Recognise different types of overhead lines, voltages, and associated risks.
• Understand legislation and guidance: Comply with HSE Guidance Note GS6 (Fourth Edition), ENATS 43-8, The Electricity at Work Regulations, and the Electricity,
Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations (ESQCR).
• Conduct risk assessments: Evaluate site-specific hazards and implement effective control measures.
• Develop and apply SSOW: Design, implement, and maintain safe procedures when operating machinery or performing work near overhead lines.
• Define safe working clearances: Establish exclusion zones and minimum approach distances.
• Use safety equipment correctly: Apply GS6 goalposts, cable markers, signage, cones, barriers, and height measurement tools effectively.
• Follow emergency procedures: Respond appropriately to incidents or accidental contact with overhead lines.
• Engage with network operators: Consult with local DNOs, Transmission Companies, or IDNOs during planning or emergencies.
