About this course

The Cat & Genny (Cable Avoidance) course trains operatives, supervisors, and engineers to safely identify and avoid underground cables and pipes using a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Signal Generator (Genny), reducing the risk of accidents and service strikes in excavation work.

What you will learn

  • Basic principles of underground service location and avoidance.
  • Hazard identification and understanding the main risks associated with underground services.
  • Reading and interpreting site plans accurately.
  • Practical and safe operation of Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT) and Signal Generators (Genny) Operational techniques including live and dead signal detection, power and radio modes, use of accessories, and accuracy assessment.
  • Recognizing limitations and situations where cable detection may not be fully effective Training typically combines classroom and practical hands-on sessions, using case studies, group discussions, and practical exercises, followed by written or multiple-choice assessments.
