The Abrasive Wheels Mounters Course trains individuals to safely mount and manage abrasive wheels on grinding and cutting machines in compliance with PUWER 1998, combining theoretical instruction with practical exercises.

Course Aims and Objectives:

The course is structured to ensure safe mounting, handling, and use of abrasive wheels and discs on grinding and cutting machines. It covers compliance with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and the related HSE guidance (HSG17) for workplace safety. The training helps reduce the risk of wheel burst, injury, and equipment damage while promoting proper use of safety equipment and procedures

What you will learn

The training covers both theory and hands-on practical skills, including:

  • Legal and regulatory requirements under PUWER 1998 and HSG17 guidance Hazards associated with abrasive wheels (wheel breakage, flying debris, vibration, and dust hazards)
  • Selection and identification of appropriate wheels (markings, permissible speeds) Safe storage, handling, and transportation of wheels
  • Practical demonstrations and exercises on dressing, balancing, mounting, and setting up abrasive wheels on machines Use of guards, work rests, and personal protective equipment (PPE) Safe operational practices and risk minimisation techniques
