The Abrasive Wheels (Theory & Practical) course equips participants with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills to safely operate, inspect, and maintain abrasive wheels, ensuring compliance with UK safety regulations and reducing risks of workplace accidents

What you will learn

The theory sessions focus on:

  • legal requirements, workplace hazards, and safe practices for abrasive wheels, including health and safety legislation such as: PUWER 1998, HASWA 1974, MHSWR 1999, Control of Vibration, Noise, and COSHH regulations
  • Hazards of abrasive wheels: wheel burst, entrapment, flying debris, vibration, and dust inhalation, structure, marking, types, and safe storage of abrasive wheels, selection of correct wheels and machine compatibility.
  • the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and guards
  • Employer and employee responsibilities

 Practical sessions provide hands-on experience under supervision to develop safe operational skills such as:

  • Mounting and changing abrasive wheels safely
  • Machine safety: machine safety checks, correct start-up and shutdown procedures, emergency stopping techniques and hazard awareness Dressing, truing, and balancing wheels on bench/pedestal grinders
  • Operating equipment: angle grinders, chop saws, disc cutters, and other portable machinery if provided by the client 4 Practical exercises, which include cutting and grinding
