Delegate Requirements

To successfully complete this intensive 2 day course, you must have: -

  • A relevant healthcare qualification, e.g. nurse, health worker, care assistant
  • A prior practical understanding of people moving
  • Experience in working in a healthcare/social care setting
  • The physical capability of practical people moving and handling
  • A keen interest in patient or resident care

Session 1: Controversial Techniques 11:00 - 11:20 (20 minutes)

Session 2: Ergonomics and Equipment Core Skills (no equipment) 11:20 - 12:45 (85 minutes)

  • Moving resident forward in a chair (minimum and maximum assistance)
  • Moving resident forward in a chair (Handling Belt)
  • Sitting to standing from chair
  • Forwards, sideways and backwards steps (by one carer & two carers)
  • Combination moves (by two carers)
  • Independent but unstable resident
  • 180 degrees move (no turntable)
  • Assisted Walking (with/without frame)
  • Self Help from the floor
  • Moving resident onto Bed (by one carer & two carers)
  • Sitting & Standing resident up from Bed (by one carer & two carers)

Lunch break: 12:45 - 13:15 (30 minutes)

Session 3: Ergonomics and Equipment Core Skills (simple equipment) 13:15 - 14:30 (75 minutes)

  • Transfer Handling Belt & Turntable
  • Transfer using Transfer Board
  • Using one way Slide Sheet (by one carer)
  • No slide sheet with verbal instruction (by one carer)
  • No slide sheet and with verbal instructions and legs (by two carers)
  • Applications of slide sheets (two techniques)
  • Moving resident up the bed – Slide Sheet (by one carer & two carers)
  • Removal of slide sheets
  • Wheelchair Use

Afternoon Break: 14:30 - 14:45 (15 minutes)

Session 4: Ergonomics and Equipment Core Skills (simple equipment) 14:45 - 16:45 (120 minutes)

  • Purpose of Hoisting
  • Hoisting Incidents
  • General Purpose Hoist – Essential Checks
  • Hoisting resident from floor to bed
  • Hoisting resident from bed to wheelchair
  • Hoist chair to chair
  • Transfer Rota-stand and Steady
  • Falls Equipment (Camel / Elk)
