Description
This online course will meet the training requirements for the OSHA construction asbestos standard 1926.1101, Class IV workers (workers who contact asbestos, but do not disturb asbestos), and the EPA’s AHERA regulation training requirements for staff, teachers, & contractors. In addition, this course will meet the New York State Department of Labor's 4-hour asbestos awareness requirements for the apprentice program. This course has eight parts - an Asbestos Fact Sheet, Asbestos Physical Characteristics, Asbestos Health Effects, Asbestos Regulations, NYSDOL ICR56 Introduction, and NYCDEP Title 15 Introduction. We recommend reading the flyer and the fact sheets to assist you with the course. To complete the course you must watch all five videos. After each video, there is a quiz on the presentation you just watched. You must pass each quiz with a 100% to complete the course. The person taking the course has 45 days to complete the course. 6. Asbestos latency period
7. Relationship of asbestos exposure to asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma
8. Exposure to family members
DISCUSSION: 0.5 Hr.
Typical on-the-job encounters with Asbestos Containing Materials associated with the student's specific job. The discussions will include:
Places where ACM is found on the job and when to report on the condition of the ACM to your supervisor.
Situations dealing with ACM and how to manage them
An overview on entering and exiting a work area including the need to wear personal protective equipment, and utilizing hygiene facilities, also the statement that this course does not allow the employee to enter a work area
Determining when an area is clean.

DECONTAMINATION SYSTEM: 0.5 hrs
The sequential steps of workers in the clean room, shower room, and equipment room; the direction of air flow through the rooms; the security of the work area, the purpose of the exit and entry log. Differences between OSHA, New York State, and New York City decontamination systems. Requirements of posting of variances, emergency numbers, licenses, and certifications at the entrance.
PREPARATION OF THE WORK AREA: 0.5 hrs
The cleaning and removal of fixed and non-fixed objects; posting of warning signs; proper construction and maintenance of barriers; electrical and ventilation lock out systems.
ENGINEERING CONTROLS: 0.5 hrs
Proper working techniques for minimizing fiber release; use of wet methods and surfactants; use of negative pressure ventilation equipment, and proper use of HEPA vacuums.
GLOVEBAG AND TENT PROCEDURES: 0.25 hrs
The sequential steps and techniques necessary to properly remove asbestos pipe lagging to avoid the release of airborne fibers (Glovebag video).
CLEAN-UP AND DISPOSAL: 0.25 hrs.
Proper clean up, HEPA vacuuming, wet wiping, and lockdown techniques, multiple phase cleanings, disposal process, bagging, labeling, drum storage, and transport.
