Description
The recent publication of the IPCC's 6th Assessment Report has brought into sharp focus the increasing threat to the planet of climate change. Excessive emissions of carbon into the atmosphere by are leading to global warming at an accelerating rate. Most of the power we produce comes from fossil fuels – in 2019 in the United States 63% of electricity came from fossil fuels like coal and natural gas, with less than 20% coming from renewable energy sources. In today's introductory session on sustainability, we will consider the impact of carbon on the planet and how countries and companies are working towards "carbon neutrality", balancing carbon emissions with carbon off-setting or carbon removal. We will look at what organizations can do to calculate and then reduce their carbon footprint, including the adoption of roadmaps to carbon neutrality.
