French is an official language in 29 countries, making it the the second-most widespread language worldwide after English by number of countries. In Europe French is the official language not only of France, but of southern Belgium, western Switzerland, Monaco, and other communities in Europe – not to mention much of Africa and the Caribbean, and Quebec in Canada.
French is related to other popular languages. French is a part of the Romance group of languages, and it has a lot in common with Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and other Latin-based languages. So if you already know one of these languages, French will be easier for you. And if you don’t, then knowing some French can help you learn these other languages later.
French is the fourth-most widely spoken mother tongue in the European Union, according to a survey of the European Commission. It is also the third-most widely understood language in the EU.
