With Spanish you’ll be able to communicate with lots of people – not only in Spain. Spanish is the native language of 400 million people, and an estimated 548 million people speak Spanish as their first or second language. It’s spoken in 19 countries in the Americas, plus Spain itself – 20 countries. In the European Union, Spanish is the mother tongue of 8% of the population, with an additional 7% speaking it as a second language.
Spanish is related to other popular languages. Spanish is a part of the Ibero-Romance group of languages, and it has a lot in common with French, Italian, Portuguese and other Latin-based languages. So if you already know one of these languages, Spanish will be easier for you. And if you don’t, then knowing some Spanish can help you learn these other languages later.
Spanish is the third-most spoken language in the world by total number of speakers (after Mandarin and English). Internet usage statistics for 2007 show Spanish as the third most commonly used language on the Internet, after English and Mandarin.
