Description
This 1 day course is principally concerned with the electrical installation aspects of earthing and bonding and with the principal protective measure of fault protection against electric shock (automatic disconnection of supply). It draws from the requirements embodied in the relevant parts, chapters and sections of BS 7671:2008 Requirements for Electrical Installations (IET Wiring Regulations, Seventeenth Edition). Where appropriate, other standards such as BS 7430:2011 Code of practice for protective earthing of electrical installations are also referred to as well as international and European standards where relevant.
Earthing and bonding together with automatic disconnection are essential aspects of electrical installation design, the requirements of which depend to a large extent on the system type. These aspects are discussed and reviewed.
Information Technology equipment presents special difficulties for electrical installations. Although specific guidance is given within BS7671 for IT intensive environments, such as computer rooms, many electrical designers are not familiar with this guidance. Simple application of the requirements is unlikely to achieve a suitably resilient electrical supply to an IT intensive area. This course also includes the requirements to provide an effective earthing and bonding system for IT environments.
