Mindfulness to help with Sleep

Mindful Surrey offers classes to help people improve their sleep. This can be through one-off sessions or a series of several sessions. We share a range of effective techniques and strategies to cope with insomnoa and other sleep issues. We can run these classes for a group or for individuals, in-person or online. 

What you will learn

You will learn a range of strategies and techniques that can be used to help get to sleep, and also to improve the quality of your sleep.

Meditations that can be helpful with sleep issues where you focus on relaxing different parts of the body, such as a Body Scan meditation.

You will learn a wide range of different breathing exercises to help you let go of intrusive thoughts and unpleasant emotions.

It often helps to get the attention off oneself when one is struggling to go to sleep; so a Kindly Awareness meditation, which includes sending good wishes to other people who are also struggling with sleep in the world at the same time, is helpful. When you consider people in the world who might be trying to sleep in a cold doorway, ill in hospital, extremely hungry or in a war zone, it can put your worries about simply being tired the next day into perspective.

We often struggle to sleep when we are caught up in thoughts and worries, so you will also learn meditations to help you step back from overthinking and intrudive thoughts.

Visualisation sometimes works well for people - perhaps imagining your thoughts are drifting along like clouds in a sky, or leaves on a stream. Or picturing gentle waves coming and going on a lovely sandy beach, in time with your breath.

If we can have a sense that we are resting our bodies and minds, and appreciate the value of that, it can be easier to let go of trying to get to sleep. Sleep is not something that we can force ourselves into. Bringing kindness and patience to our experience is also of great benefit.

Doing a meditation gives you something to do when faced with the frustrating of not getting to sleep, and it can help you calm down. 

People also find that by falling asleep to a meditation where we wish ourselves and others well can improve the quality of sleep.
