Description
The aim of this course is to advise on precautions on the prevention of accidents in the use of abrasive wheels. It does not enter into technical aspects of grinding.
The risk of breakage is inherent in every abrasive wheel. If the
frequency of breakage is to be kept low, the initial care in design, manufacture and test by abrasive wheel and machine makers must be coupled with the adoption of sound safety measures by those who use them.
The number of accidents caused by wheel breakages and the circumstances, in which they have occurred, reveal that most could have been avoided by an appreciation of the risks and of the safety precautions necessary. We deal within this training with the risk of injury resulting from wheel breakage and the danger of contact with the running wheel.
An abrasive wheel means not only a wheel consisting of bonded abrasive particles with which there is a recognised risk of bursting. The definition also includes, for example, coated abrasive discs, made of wood and metal with a surface of abrasive material.
With abrasive wheels of these kinds there is no bursting risk but guarding is required to protect the operator against the risk of contact or entanglement.
